At the youth level (3rd-8th Grade), the overriding player development goals of the program are:

  1. Make sure every player has an absolute blast and increases his love of the game.
  2. Improve the overall skill level of every player and challenge each player to “own” his development.
  3. Increase overall lax IQ and teach players how to make plays in all areas of the field (play hard, fast, and smart).
  4. Build Skipjack’s friendships and bonds across south shore towns and families.

We have put a lot of thought and trial/error into how to organize our teams  and have come up with the following PROGRESSION MODEL.  It is an organization model that focuses on inclusion and flexibility at the younger ages, to commitment and competitiveness in the middle school years.

Grade K, 1, 2, & 3 Levels:
The focus of North River Lacrosse at these levels is introducing the sport to any kid with interest and foster fundamental skill development.  We have skills clinics in the Summer, Fall, and Winter where the focus is on teaching these skills in a focused yet fun way.  The goal being…  Get the kids to the 3rd and 4th grade with a solid foundation of basic skills so they can have a smooth transition to the full field game and our Skipjacks teams.

Grade 4, 5 & 6 Levels:  More activities and 3-season commitment (fall, winter, and summer).

In Grades 5 & 6, we have open tryouts for our teams.  Our goal is to get enough kids at tryouts where we can support a maximum of 3 teams at these grade levels.  Here is the commitment required for players on the team:

  • FALL: The team will practice 4-5 times in the fall (once a week) and go to TWO Fall tournaments..
  • WINTER:  There will be aprox 20 indoor sessions included in the price that players can attend and there will be optional events for those looking for more lacrosse.
  • SUMMER:  The team will practice 5-6 times and attend 3 weekend tournaments

Grade 7 & 8 Levels:  Ratchet up commitment another level…

In Grades 7 & 8, we have open tryouts for our teams.  Our goal is to get enough kids at tryouts where we can support a maximum of 3 teams at these grade levels.  Here is the commitment required for players on the team:

  • WINTER:  All players on our Grades 7 & 8 Elite teams will be able to attend approximately 20 indoor sessions throughout the winter.  There will also be optional events for those looking for more lacrosse indoor tournament for those interested.
  • SUMMER:  The team will practice 5-6 times and attend 3 weekend tournaments

Grade 9: Player Development still priority, but showcasing gains increased importance.

In Grade 9, we have open tryouts for our teams.  Our goal is to get enough kids at tryouts where we can support a maximum of 2 teams.  Here is the commitment required for players on the team:

  • FALL: The team will practice 4-5 times in the fall (once a week) and go to TWO Fall tournaments.

In Grade 10 an 11, we have open tryouts for our teams.  Will will not have more than ONE team at each grade (or two teams across both grades).  Here is the commitment required for players on the team:
